The Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources works to implement the government’s economic agenda by enabling business growth to support job creation and a strong economy. The department is focused on building a globally competitive business environment, including through reforms to reduce the cost of doing business. With rapid technological advances, the department also seeks to ensure our regulatory systems continue to be fit for purpose. The department’s Office of the Chief Economist provides objective, robust and high quality economic analysis to inform policy development across the industry, innovation and resource sectors.

The Resources Division within the department provides policy advice to government on matters relating to the exploration, investment, management and development of Australia’s mineral and energy resources. The division is also responsible for supporting the government in the realisation of the National Resources Statement. It also administers a range of regulatory functions relating to offshore petroleum and minerals activity, including supporting the Minister for Resources, Water and Northern Australia in his role as the Commonwealth member of the Joint Authorities. The division also includes the National Offshore Petroleum Titles Administrator (NOPTA) who is responsible for the day-to-day administration of offshore petroleum and greenhouse gas storage titles on behalf of the Joint Authorities.

The work of the division links into the department’s broader objective of contributing to building a diversified, flexible, resilient and dynamic economic environment in which business can compete and grow to adapt to new markets and capture emerging opportunities. The department works in partnership with agencies such as Geoscience Australia, CSIRO and the National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority, as well as state and territory governments and businesses to deliver on these aims.

Geoscience Australia is the national geoscience public sector organisation delivering trusted advice and information on the geology and geography of Australia. Geoscience Australia supports the oil and gas industry by undertaking regional basin studies, assessments of hydrocarbon prospectivity and by providing a wealth of pre-competitive geological and environmental data. That work is also used by the Australian Government to attract domestic and foreign investment to search for new energy resources and hence sustain Australia’s indigenous energy supply into the future.
