The Department of Industry, Innovation and Science facilitates the growth and productivity of globally competitive industries. The department also support the building of a strong scientific capability, business innovation and the commercialisation of new ideas as critical requirements for productivity and economic growth.
The Resources Division of the department has responsibility for the provision of high quality policy advice and program delivery to expand Australia's resource base, increase the international competitiveness of our resources sector, and improve the regulatory regime consistent with the principles of environmental responsibility and sustainable development.
The division provides the Australian Government with upstream offshore petroleum-related policy support and legislative oversight, including supporting the Minister for Resources and Northern Australia in his role as the Commonwealth member of the Joint Authorities. The division, through the National Offshore Petroleum Titles Administrator (NOPTA), is also responsible for the administration of offshore petroleum and greenhouse gas storage titles on behalf of the Joint Authorities.
The department works in partnership with key portfolio agencies such as Geoscience Australia and the National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority, as well as state and territory governments and businesses to deliver these aims.
The department’s Office of the Chief Economist provides objective, robust and high quality economic analysis to inform policy development across industry, innovation, resources, energy and evaluation.
