The Geological Survey of NSW
The Geological Survey of NSW (GSNSW) is the state’s premier geoscience agency and is part of the
NSW Department of Planning and Environment. It collects and manages geological, geophysical and
geospatial data to inform the government, resource industry and the community about the state's geology,
mineral, coal and petroleum resources. Dating back to 1875, it is the oldest continuously operating
government agency in NSW.
The GSNSW provides geoscientific data and information to:
• optimise sustainable and socially and environmentally responsible mineral and petroleum exploration and development,
• assist resource, land use and infrastructure planning, and
• encourage investment in the NSW resource industry.
