The excursion will provide an introduction to the Mesozoic and Palaeozoic geology of the northern Perth Basin, a now mature gas and oil province with 9 of 20 fields discovered remaining in production ― the most recent discoveries, Waitsia and Senecio, came online in August 2016. Aspects to be covered by the excursion include sedimentology of reservoir and source facies, and structure, commencing with a half-day inspection of core at the Department of Mines and Petroleum core library in Perth, and followed by examination of outcrops between Cervantes and Kalbarri.
All accommodation and meals will be provided during the excursion, which will finish with participants returned to their hotels in Perth at approximately 7pm on the Sunday evening. Transport will be in a comfortable coach with accommodation at local motels where breakfast and evening meals will be supplied. Lunch will be provided safari-style in the field. The approximate cost of the tour will be $1100 per person (twin share) for 10 to 22 participants.
The excursion will be led by the Geological Survey of Western Australia’s Arthur Mory, who has worked extensively on the Phanerozoic geology of the State.
All expressions of interest should be lodged by 30 March 2017. A minimum number of participants will need to be secured for the tour to operate.
