Pre & Post Seminars

Technical Seminar: Advanced Basin Analysis for Petroleum Prospectivity

Three-day course organised by: SRK Consulting: Dr Bruce McConachie, Dr Peter Stuart Smith and Dr Mark Ke Yang Ma

Thursday 14th, Friday 15th and Saturday 16th of April 2011

SRK Consulting, 10 Richardson St, West Perth

This course aims to remind the practicing petroleum geologist, and others working in the hydrocarbon exploration and production industry, of the main principles of each of these different disciplines, and to show how they may be brought together to provide an understanding of all types of sedimentary basins, and the petroleum systems that lie within them. Also to show how this understanding may be used to predict where, in what quantities and of what type, hydrocarbons may be found within a basin. The course will cover more advanced topics designed for those who have already gained significant experience in the field. The learning will be accentuated through case studies and discussions and you will have many opportunities to share your challenges and opinions about basin analysis.

Organised by SRK Consulting, this course is useful for basin management and analysts, exploration professionals, geologists, geophysicists, geoscientists, petroleum engineers, reservoir engineers, risk management, research and development and project support and services. This course will also bring value to O&G Operators, Exploration Contractors, Drilling Contractors and O&G service providers

This course was not included in the APPEA registration fees.

Women in oil and gas: diversity strategies for commercial success

Hosted and coordinated by: Ernst & Young

Sunday 10 April 2011
3.00pm – 5.30pm

Ernst & Young, Level 5, 11 Mounts Bay Road, Perth (20m walk from the convention centre)

Both the regulatory environment and pending skills shortages have provided compelling context for the focus on gender diversity. With Australian resource projects booming, the oil and gas sector is increasingly turning to women as the largest source of untapped talent.

In the recently released World Economic Forum report, Australia is ranked 23 on the Global Gender Gap Index Ranking. However in the last four years Australia has decreased its position from rank 15 to 23. This clearly demonstrates Australia is losing its competitive position through not engaging on the issue of gender diversity as quickly as other nations and in spite of the focus on this issue, there is more work to be done.

This forum will comprise a distinguished panel who will discuss in an open forum the fundamental changes required by businesses to remain competitive in the sector, and what success looks like for commercial diversity strategies.

Panelists:

  • Ann Pickard, Country Chair, Shell Australia
  • Belinda Robinson, Chief Executive, APPEA
  • Catherine Fox, Deputy Editor, AFR Boss/Corporate Woman Columnist
  • Don Volete, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Woodside Energy
  • Amy Poynton, Partner, Ernst & Young

Technical Seminar: Reservoir Permeability Prediction Course

Two-day course organised by: SPE Facilitator: Professor Reza Rezaee, Curtin University, Department of Petroleum Engineering

Thursday 14th and Friday 15th April 2011
Perth Convention Centre

Permeability of rocks and relative permeability values are very important to understand, since their values are used as a measure of the transmission of fluids through the reservoir, and are useful in determining the degree to which different fluid saturations and flow through a reservoir can occur relative to each other. These output values influence how we compute the life of a reservoir, reserve estimates, daily production values and so on. However, there are many methods available which we can use to make an estimation of permeability, and each has its own pitfall/accuracy. Permeability obtained from image analysis methods will be discussed along with mercury injection methods. NMR and artificial neural networks (ANN) will be introduced along with multi-regression analysis to allow the student to apply the learning in practice.

Organised by SPE, this course is useful for geologists and petroleum engineers who use permeability values on a daily basis. It will describe how reasonably accurate permeability values are also obtainable using log data and ANN software in the absence of whole core."

This course was not included in the APPEA registration fees.

Organised by industry, for industry, the APPEA Conference and Exhibition has been hosted by the Australian Petroleum Production & Exploration Association (APPEA) for over 50 years. APPEA member companies produce over 98 per cent of Australia’s oil and gas.
